After a 2020 that saw one Grand Slam cancelled (Wimbledon) and Roland Garros shifted to the fall, things are back to normal this year — kinda. Back in April, the 2021 French Open was moved one week later with the hope of the shift allowing for more fans to attend.
Now with things about to get underway, all eyes will be on the “King of Clay,” Rafael Nadal, as he goes for his 14th title — and fifth consecutive — at Roland Garros. If he wins the tournament, he will break a tie with Roger Federer for most men’s Grand Slam titles. The duo is tied at 20.

And, now, here’s the kicker — he may have to go through Federer to do it. Nadal, the No. 3 seed, could meet Federer, the No. 8 seed, in the semifinals in Paris. But, that’s not even the best part. Why? Well, the 39-year-old Federer, who hasn’t played much in the last 15 months following two minor knee surgeries, is on a collision course with world No. 1 Novak Djokovic in the quarterfinals. Yep, the ”Big Three” are on the same side of the draw.
On the women’s side, world No. 1 and 2019 champ Ash Barty back in Paris after skipping last year’s tourney due to the COVID-19 pandemic. She’ll face some stiff competition with defending champ Iga Swiatek, Coco Gauff, Sofia Kenin and Jennifer Brady all in the same half of the draw. Serena Williams is still looking to make some history of her own — she is one Grand Slam singles title away from tying Margaret Court’s record of 24. Williams has won three times at Roland Garros, the last in 2015. She’ll see the likes of Bianca Andreescu and Naomi Osaka in her side of the draw.
