The Calgary Flames are set to add a depth option to the blue line for training camp by bringing in veteran defenseman Tyson Barrie on a professional tryout (PTO).

According to Frank Seravalli, who revealed the news on Sportsnet 960 The Fan, the 33-year-old Barrie is close to accepting the invitation, giving him a chance to audition for a spot on the Flames’ roster. Currently an unrestricted free agent, Barrie is eager to prove he still has plenty to offer.

Barrie posted an impressive 13-goal, 55-point campaign in 2022-23, but he struggled when he joined the Nashville Predators in 2023-24. His NHL career stats are solid, but being a healthy scratch with the Preds has left NHL clubs unsure about what he can bring to a roster. There was talk the Edmonton Oilers had also reached out about a PTO.

With 109 goals and 396 assists in 809 regular-season games, Barrie feels he’s got something left in the tank. He has averaged over 21 minutes of ice time per night in recent seasons and he’s known for his offensive abilities, particularly on the power play. If he earns a spot on a busy right side with the Flames, he could be of value. At the very least, he could turn into a potential trade asset.

Barrie is looking for a bounce-back opportunity with the Flames. The hope is that his PTO can lead to a league-minimum contract. Meanwhile, his potential addition would not only some offensive skill to the Flames’ lineup but also veteran leadership, something the Flames could benefit from as they navigate their current rebuild.

Barrie has previously played for the Colorado Avalanche, Toronto Maple Leafs, Edmonton Oilers, and Predators. He’s still free to sign with any team.
