Perhaps one of the toughest rounds of fixtures at Euro 2024 is Group D with France, the Netherlands, Poland and Austria all set to face off.

Les Bleus are looking to bounce back from their World Cup final heartbreak in Qatar 18 months ago by claiming their first European honour since 2000 and they are strong favourites to top the group.

Didier Deschamps’ men are one of the most backed nations to win the tournament but they sit alongside a resurgent Dutch side under Ronald Koeman.

There is no guarantee that the above powerhouses will make it out of the first round and both Poland as well as Austria will fancy themselves to cause an upset.

France beat the Netherlands twice in their qualifying campaign and hold a strong record against their other two opponents as well.

But Austria recorded their best-ever finish at the Euros in the last tournament, making the last 16 before being knocked out by Italy.

Poland come into the summer’s event having beaten Wales in the play-off final but they are not there simply to participate.

Predictions, Bets, Odds

The odds listed below were provided by bet365 and were correct at the time of publication. However, they are subject to change.

Netherlands to win the group @ 11/4 with bet365

Poland to qualify @ 5/4 with bet365

There is not as much value in group betting for this set of teams as they are strong across the board, meaning one could likely progress as one of the best third-placed teams.

However, there are a few prices that take our fancy.

While France are heavy favourites to win Group D, one slip-up could open the door for the Netherlands to snatch top spot away from them.

It is a toss-up between Austria and Poland for third place but again, should one of them win against the Dutch or French, a top-two place is not out of the question.

If you are looking to take a risk in the Group D market, France are currently sitting at 10/1 not to qualify, but it would take a monumental collapse for that to happen.

Likewise, Austria and Poland to win the group as it stands are being priced at 8/1 and 10/1 respectively.

Stranger things have happened at the Euros before so it may be worth considering before you finalise your pre-tournament bets.

Group Preview

According to Opta, France have a 92.9% chance of progressing to the knockout stages and a 57.9% chance of winning the group.

But everyone remembers Germany’s embarrassing exit from the 2022 World Cup, despite being the favourites to progress alongside Spain, Japan and Costa Rica.

The Netherlands are expected to follow them, with a 76.2% chance of making it through, whereas Austria (51.1%) and Poland (45%) are not believed to be capable of challenging them.

Koeman’s side have just a 5.1% chance of winning the entire tournament, but fans following their team will be aware that they won the last Euros to be held in Germany, back in 1988.

Their manager was part of the squad that won the trophy that year and he has plenty of world-class talent available as he looks to win it in 2024 as a manager.

The Oranje will get a good test of where they are at when they play second favourites France on 21 June.

Kylian Mbappe has just announced his move to Real Madrid so will be fuelled for the challenge. Although he probably does not need any more motivation, the Frenchman is yet to score at the European Championships, however, he did bag nine times in qualifying.

Austria are being led by Ralf Rangnick, who reportedly turned down the Bayern Munich job and reaffirmed his commitment to his homeland.

Their 2021 finish was the best in their history and under the former Manchester United manager they will be a fascinating watch as they press aggressively and turn the ball over in dangerous areas.

Poland qualified for Euro 2024 by the skin of their teeth, failing to register a shot on target in 120 minutes against Wales in the play-offs, but they still have a lot of firepower in their squad.

Robert Lewandowski could be competing for the last time and he will be hoping that his country can add to their two wins from the 14 matches they have played at the tournament.
