For the second time in just over five weeks, Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Tyler Glasnow is going on the injured list.
Glasnow, 30, was placed on the 15-day IL with elbow tendonitis before Friday’s game. That follows him going to the IL on July 9 with back tightness. He was activated on July 24 and made four starts before getting hurt again.
In 22 starts this season, Glasnow has 168 strikeouts in 134 innings (a career high) with a 3.49 ERA and 9–6 record.
Justin Wrobleski was recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma City to take Glasnow’s spot on the roster and started Friday’s matchup with the St. Louis Cardinals. In his previous stint with the Dodgers this season, the left-hander made four starts, compiling a 4.04 ERA and 15 strikeouts in 20 innings. Wrobleski was sent back to the minors when the Dodgers added Jack Flaherty at the trade deadline.
Glasnow was scheduled to start Saturday after being pushed back a day in the rotation. Bobby Miller is now expected to start in Glasnow’s place. Miller was already with the team on the Dodgers’ taxi squad, but hasn’t pitched since July 9. In seven starts, he has an 8.07 ERA with 27 strikeouts in 29 innings.
On the bright side, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts told reporters after Friday’s game that an MRI on Glasnow’s elbow showed structural damage and he expects the right-hander to return once eligible after 15 days. Even so, it is still more bad news for a Dodgers pitching staff that has been wiped out by injuries this season.
Earlier this week, rookie River Ryan suffered a season-ending injury that requires Tommy John surgery. He joins Tony Gonsolin and Emmet Sheehan, who both had season-ending surgery, while Dustin May has a torn esophagus.
Walker Buehler was activated from the IL on Wednesday. He struggled in his return, allowing four runs in 3 1/3 innings. Yoshinobu Yamamoto appears to be making progress from a rotator cuff strain and threw a simulated game on Friday.
Elsewhere on the roster, Ryan Brasier and Connor Brogdon are set to begin minor-league rehab assignments soon. Brusdar Graterol is recovering from a hamstring strain, and Blake Treinen is dealing with left hip discomfort.
The Dodgers are now in a battle in the NL West, holding a two-game lead over the San Diego Padres and Arizona Diamondbacks. (Los Angeles had an 8 1/2-game lead on July 23.)
