Boxing star Devin Haney was arrested and later released after a routine traffic stop in Los Angeles Wednesday, during which police allegedly found a semi-automatic handgun. The news was first reported by TMZ Sports and later confirmed by ESPN.
Haney was reportedly not at the wheel of his vehicle when it was pulled over for an “unsafe” lane change the driver made without using a turn signal, according to the report.
During the stop, police reportedly found a semi-automatic handgun under the driver’s seat. The report alleges no one claimed ownership of the gun, and Haney was subsequently arrested for felony possession of a concealed weapon in a vehicle.
“The Dream” was released Thursday morning on $35,000 bail and is reportedly due in court for a hearing regarding the charge in August.
“It’s a misunderstanding that will be solved when Devin goes to court,” Haney’s father, trainer and manager, Bill Haney, said via ESPN. “It’s unfortunate that he was arrested with his armed licensed security, and I’m confident things are going to be worked out.”
The alleged infraction comes right as Haney (30-0, 15 KO) unofficially agreed to his next fight. Two-time champion Teofimo Lopez (19-1, 13 KOs) took to social media Wednesday night to announce that he was ending his retirement for a shot to fight Haney and hold the WBO super lightweight title once again.

Lopez, 25, claimed to be retiring on ESPN’s “This Just In” in June. He took some shots on social media as he rescinded that decision. Calling Haney’s victories into question, he said he was “tired of helping [him] be something that he is not.”
Haney responded to a separate tweet with more trash talk, simply writing “Let’s do it..”
The legal trouble might throw a wrench into planning for the fight, but similar situations rarely seem to thwart an anticipated boxing matchup. Instead, it will likely come down to cash. Haney and Lopez were already publicly debating over money Wednesday night.
If their camps can agree on a price, fans could see the pair hash things out sometime after Haney’s court proceedings are finished.
