The Devils have traded defenseman John Marino and a fifth-round pick (No. 153) to the Utah Hockey Club in exchange for the No. 49 pick in the 2024 NHL Draft and Edmonton‘s 2025 second-round pick, the team announced.
New Jersey used the second-round pick on the top-ranked North American goaltender Mikhail Yegorov of the Omaha Lancers (USHL).
Marino, 27, was drafted in the fifth round by the Oilers in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft and eventually made his debut with the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2019 after playing college hockey at Harvard.
He was traded to the Devils on July 16, 2022 in exchange for Ty Smith and a 2023 third-round pick.
Marino played in 139 games for New Jersey over two seasons, including 75 last season, recording eight goals and 35 assists. Over 328 games in five NHL seasons, Marino has amassed 18 goals with 89 assists and owns a +38 plus/minus.
In a separate trade, the Devils acquired F Paul Cotter and a 2025 third-round pick from the Vegas Golden Knights in exchange for Alexander Holtz and Akira Schmid.
Cotter, 24, was a fourth-round pick by Vegas in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft and debuted for the club during the 2022-23 season. Over 138 career games in three seasons, Cotter has recorded 22 goals and 23 assists. He played in a career-high 76 games for the Golden Knights this past year, but was a -11 on the ice.
Holtz was the No. 7 overall pick by New Jersey in 2020 and made his debut during the 2021-22 season. He played all 82 games last year, recording 16 goals and 12 assists. Over three seasons and 110 games, Holtz has scored 19 goals with 15 assists and owns a -26 plus/minus.
Schmid was drafted by the Devils in the fifth round of the 2018 NHL Draft. He’s played 43 games (33 starts) for NJ over three seasons, including 19 games (15 starts) last year. Schmid owns a 14-18-3 record in the net with 2.90 GAA and a .899 save percentage.
