Dean Smith slams ‘pathetic’ decision to award Pogba penalty: ‘Sterling had 4 or 5 touches on him’ vs Chelsea

Aston Villa boss Dean Smith has this evening revealed his disillusionment with the spot-kick awarded to Manchester United earlier today.

Cavani rounds out the scoring

Smith and co. of course welcomed the Red Devils to Villa Park this afternoon.

The Claret and Blue headed into proceedings with little to play for, having long seen their European ambitions brought to an end, amid a slide to mid-table in the Premier League.

Nevertheless, though, it was indeed Villa who went on to open the scoring on Sunday.

A weak piece of defending on the part of Victor Lindelof allowed Bertrand Traore enough room to drill a fine strike into the top corner of Dean Henderson’s net:

Manchester United, however, are quickly making a name for themselves as the masters of the comeback, and today proved no different.

Bruno Fernandes was first up, levelling things up from the penalty spot early in the 2nd-half.

Then, Mason Greenwood turned the clash on its head courtesy of a pinpoint left-footed strike beyond Emi Martinez, before Edinson Cavani made sure of all three points for the visitors with a trademark header inside the closing five minutes.

‘Don’t think anybody knows’

Villa, in turn, remain 11th in the Premier League table.

As outlined above, however, one man who evidently feels that the Villans were hard done by in their defeat on Sunday is manager Dean Smith.

Speaking in a post-match interview this evening, the Aston Villa boss was quick to air his grievances with the penalty awarded to Manchester United, en route to the Reds’ equaliser.

Smith highlighted what he felt was minimal contact between Douglas Luiz and Paul Pogba, comparing the situation to one during Saturday’s meeting between Man City and Chelsea, which saw the former denied a late spot-kick after a coming together between Kurt Zouma and Raheem Sterling:

‘I don’t think anybody knows, everybody is confused how Raheem Sterling can go through and have four or five touches on him last night and not get a penalty, then one touch here and it is a penalty — it looked a pathetic decision to me, but he goes down, similar to Old Trafford and last season here.’
