Dani Olmo and Pau Victor have both been granted temporary playing registrations by the Spanish government despite repeated rejections from the Spanish FA and La Liga in recent weeks.
Spain’s Council for Sports, the Consejo Superior de Deportes [CSD], ruled on Wednesday that the two players should be made available for selection until there is a definitive ruling in the case.
Olmo and Victor were both unregistered by La Liga on 31 December after Barcelona missed the deadline to prove they were compliant with the league’s financial fair play rules.
The club’s attempts to re-register the players were rejected by the Spanish FA (RFEF) and La Liga, resulting in the Catalan club submitting a 52-page appeal and more than 60 accompanying documents to the CSD, the highest sports council within the Spanish government.
Olmo had a clause in his contract that would enable him to leave on a free transfer if was not registered, but both he and Victor have remained committed to staying at the club.

La Liga rules stipulate a player cannot be registered twice in the same season, however, Wednesday’s ruling means the pair can – for now at least – feature again for Barcelona in all competitions this term.
In a statement, the CSD granted Barcelona’s “urgent precautionary measure requested by FC Barcelona and by the players Dani Olmo and Pau Victor.
“This measure, which is provisional until the appeal filed by the club and the aforementioned players is definitively resolved, suspends the Agreement of the Monitoring Committee of the RFEF-LaLiga Coordination Agreement, dated January 4, 2025, and the cancellation of the sports licenses of the aforementioned players.”
The news came shortly before Barcelona’s Spanish Super Cup semi-final against Athletic Club, but neither player has been named in the squad for tonight’s game.
Manager Hansi Flick said before the game: “I’m really happy with it [the ruling]. I think the whole team, Dani and Pau of course, are more than happy. And also everyone at the club.
“It’s the right decision.”

Barcelona sporting director Deco echoed Flick’s sentiment: “I am happy for the players. We have gone through very difficult days, and the players want to play.
“But we are so happy with the outcome and that the CSD has proved we were right, which is the important thing.”
However, Jon Uriarte, president of Barcelona’s semi-final opponents, Athletic Club, said of the outcome that “we are seeing things which are ridiculous,” adding, “cases like this don’t do any favours to Spanish football.”
