One of Clemson’s key targets in the 2026 recruiting class is now heading elsewhere.

Zelus Hicks, a highly regarded 4-star safety out of Carrollton, Georgia, made his commitment to the University of Texas public on Thursday. Hicks chose the Longhorns over several major programs, including Clemson, Tennessee, Auburn, and Georgia.

Hicks had been on Clemson’s radar since June, when he received one of their first offers for 2026. He was present for Clemson’s season opener against Georgia and had previously attended Junior Day in March, which kept him closely connected to the Tigers‘ program throughout his recruitment process.

Standing at 6-foot-2 and 180 pounds, Hicks is recognized as one of the top prospects nationally, ranked as high as No. 19 overall, and the top safety in the 2026 class. As of now, Clemson has secured commitments from three recruits in the 2026 class: 4-star quarterback Tait Reynolds, 4-star cornerback Shavar Young Jr., and 3-star quarterback Brock Bradley.

A miss for the Tigers, but not one they can’t recover from.
