Chelsea teammates set for Euro 2020 final showdown, would the winner deserve the Ballon d’Or?

Mount vs Jorginho

The Euro 2020 final will officially be decided between England and Italy.

The pair, who saw off Denmark and Spain in their semi-final clashes, will meet at Wembley on Sunday, July 11th.

The tie is, of course, interesting for a whole host of reasons. But one of the subplots heading into the game involves two Chelsea stars facing off.

From Italy, Premier League outfit Chelsea are represented by Jorginho and Emerson Palmieri.

England, meanwhile, have Mason Mount, Reece James and Ben Chilwell in their ranks.

Of all the aforementioned players, it is Mount and Jorginho who have notched the most minutes for their respective countries this summer.

The former did miss one game due isolation, but he has since returned and played key roles in England’s quarter and semi-final wins.

Jorginho, meanwhile, has been a rock at the base of Italy’s midfield, with his terrific passing giving him the ability to dictate the tempo of games whilst also contributing to the Azzurri’s attacking build-up.

And, of course, he would score the winning penalty in the semi-final vs Spain with a typically ice-cold finish.

Should a Chelsea midfielder win the Ballon d’Or?

So, either one of Mason Mount or Jorginho will end Euro 2020 having played a key role in their side securing silverware.

This, of course, comes on the back of Chelsea’s recent Champions League triumph, which saw both players play key roles throughout the tournament.

Now, the question must be asked, do either of these players deserve the Ballon d’Or this year?

And yes, the Ball d’Or is supposed to be an individual award. But we all know that it is not just the player’s displays that people look at when voting – if it was, Lionel Messi would probably win it every year.

Luka Modric’s 2018 victory is a great example of this. The midfielder had a decent but not speculator 2017/18 with Real Madrid, which did see them win the Champions League but also finish 3rd in La Liga – a similar story for Mount and Jorginho this season.

But Modric’s Ballon d’Or triumph did largely seem to come about due to his performance at the 2018 World Cup, with Croatia reaching the final before eventually losing to France.

So, if, for example, Mount starts in the final and England win their first-ever Euros, should he be in Ballon d’Or contention?

Whilst it may seem somewhat farfetched to some, it is unlikely to beyond the realms of possibility, especially if Lionel Messi’s Argentina do not win the Copa America.

As for Jorginho, Maurizio Sarri believes that the Blues midfielder should become a favourite for the Ballon d’Or with an Italy victory on Sunday:

“If Italy were to win the European Championship, it is clear that he would become one [a favourite for the Ballon d’Or].

“He is a refined player, probably not understandable by everyone.

“You have to set your eyes on him and only watch him in the game.

“He is so good and intelligent that he makes everything seem easy, rarely anything spectacular remains in your eyes. This is his greatness.”
