Shea Charles has returned to Sheffield Wednesday on loan from Southampton for the remainder of the season after the Owls struck a fresh agreement with the Premier League club.
The 21-year-old Northern Ireland international, who has arguably been the Owls’ most consistent performer this season, has made 25 Championship appearances and scored one goal, having joined on loan in August.
The former Man City youngster made 32 appearances last season as Saints were promoted to the Premier League, which sparked the attention of Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder, who revealed this week he was keen on bringing the midfielder across the steel city divide, if possible.
Owls chairman Dejphon Chansiri originally broke the news that Charles was being recalled to St Mary’s at a heated fans forum last Wednesday.
Speaking after Tuesday’s 2-2 Championship draw against Bristol City, Wednesday boss Danny Rohl told BBC Radio Sheffield: “Hopefully it’s good news but at the moment it’s maybe 50-50.”
Earlier this week Blades boss Wilder insisted his interest in Charles was “not a wind-up”.
“He’s a player we know a lot about – I know his agent really well,” Wilder told BBC Radio Sheffield.
“He’s a player we identified in the summer as well – we’re all doing our jobs whether it’s Sheffield Wednesday or us there’s a list of players so it’s not a wind-up, even though people think it might have been.
“He’s on the list and we’ll see where we go in the next week.”
