The feature race on the first Sunday of the 2023 Bing Crosby fall meeting at Del Mar was the $100,000 Betty Grable Stakes, a 7 furlong main track sprint for California-bred or sired older fillies and mares. Conditions were typical for early November, with the feature race conducted under sunny skies with a post time temperature of 67 degrees with no wind for the 3,013 fans in attendance. A field of 7 went to post with Rose Dawson sent off as the 2-1 favorite off her fourth place finish in the California Distaff Handicap at Santa Anita after winning an allowance at Los Alamitos. In to challenge her included 3-1 second choice Chancery Way, third in the Solana Beach at Del Mar after winning the Governor’s Cup at Sacramento, and 7-2 third choice Chismosa, wunless since last September and third in the California Distaff Handicap last out.


Chancery Way leads down the stretch

Jockey Antonio Fresu sent Chancery Way to the lead exiting the chute and she set fractions of 22.91 and 45.39 while pressed by 25-1 longest shot Bella D and stalked by 5-1 fourth choice Carmen Miranda. Turning into the lane Chancery Way opened up a 3 length lead through 3/4 in 1:09.88. Kept to task by Fresu, Chancery Way drew off to win by 3 3/4 lengths over late-running favorite Rose Dawson in 1:22.43. It was a neck back to Carmen Miranda third.

Left: Chancery Way in the winner’s circle. Winning trainer Jamey Thomas said, “No problem today, anyway. She broke sharp and Antonio put her on the lead like we thought we’d be and it worked out perfect for us. She’s been training really good and so we thought ‘she’s ready to roll let’s find us a race’ and this happened to be the one.”

Winning jockey Antonio Fresu said, “I didn’t know anything about this filly before I rode her today, but I went back and looked at film of some of her races. I could see she had speed and it looked like she could finish well. I thought the seven furlongs would be a good distance for her. When we turned for home, she really went. It all worked out well.”
