Australian native Cameron Smith tied a PGA Tour record for the fewest putts in a round Friday with 18 putts in 18 holes at the WGC-St. Jude Invitational in Memphis. Smith, 27, used his hot performance with the putter to match the best round of the week, an 8-under 62, to get within two strokes of 36-hole leader Harris English.
Smith had 15 putts through 16 holes and 16 putts through 17 holes before two-putting on the par-4 18th to wrap his day. His third shot on the hole, a left-to-right breaking putt up a slope for birdie that would have broken the PGA Tour record, dipped just beneath the cup. It was one of only four holes all round in which he recorded more than one putt on a green.
Smith is 11 under through 36 holes and sitting second on the leaderboard, tied with Abraham Ancer two strokes back of English. He’s seeking his fourth career PGA Tour win and second this year after winning the Zurich Classic in April with Marc Leishman.
