Jon Rahm had a six-stroke lead in the Memorial Tournament but was forced to withdraw from the PGA Tour event Saturday due to a positive COVID-19 test.
Rahm came into close contact with a person who tested positive for the virus, but had been testing negative early in the tournament. His post-round test on Friday, however, came back positive while he was already on the course on Saturday and had built a commanding lead.
Not only was it a devastating moment for Rahm, it was a rough turn of events for those who wagered on him. BetMGM, though, has decided to pay out certain bets involving Rahm.
BetMGM, a Yahoo Sports partner, will pay out those who picked Rahm as the tournament’s outright winner (both pre-tournament and during the tournament) and bettors who picked him to finish in the top five, top 10 and top 20.
The payout will be in each winner’s accounts within the next 48 hours, BetMGM announced late Saturday.
Patrick Cantlay ended up winning the tournament. He had +2200 odds when the Memorial began. One bettor won $11,220 thanks to a $510 bet on Cantlay at +2200.
According to BetMGM, 9% of the bets and 17% of the money were on Cantlay.
