Group A of the 2021 Copa América commences with two old-foes going head to head in Rio de Janeiro.

Back in 2015, Chile won this competition for the very first time, beating Argentina on penalties on home soil in the final.

Then, 358 days later, déjà vu as Chile retained their title, winning Copa América Centenario, again beating Argentina on penalties after a goalless draw, this time in New Jersey.

Since though, Chile haven’t continued to be a force.

La Roja, as reigning South American champions, failed to qualify for Russia 2018, missing out on the inter-confederation play-off place on goal difference.

Then, at Copa América 2019, wins over Japan, Ecuador and Colombia took them to the semi-finals but they were hammered 3-0 by surprise package Peru.

They’ve changed Head Coach since then; Martín Lasarte was appointed on 10 February so this is just his third competitive game at the helm.

So far, he’s managed two 1-1 draws, both in World Cup Qualifying, first away to Argentina and then, far more disappointingly, at home to Bolivia last Tuesday.

This leaves Chile seventh in the ten-team group with six of the 18 matches having been played.

Will Chile start Copa América 2021 with a victory?

Will Argentina end their long-wait for silverware?

As for Argentina, will this finally be the year they reclaim some major silverware?

In their proud history, la Albiceleste have won two World Cups, the FIFA Confederations Cup and this competition 14 times.

However, the most recent of those came way back in 1993 when they won the Copa América in Ecuador, defeating Mexico in the final.

Since then, they’ve lost in the Copa finals of 2004, 2007 and the two against Chile, 2015 and 2016, as well as the Confederations Cup Finals of 1995 and 2005 and, of course, the World Cup Final itself in 2014.

Having lost their last seven major finals in succession, will this finally be Argentina’s year?

Well, they’re unbeaten in seven competitive fixtures since losing the 2019 Copa semi-final to arch-rivals Brazil at the Mineirão.

This includes six World Cup Qualifiers, from which Lionel Scaloni’s side have amassed 12 points, leaving them second in the standings.

Earlier this month, as mentioned, they drew 1-1 with Chile and then 2-2 with Colombia in Barranquilla, despite leading in both.

Nevertheless, they are, as always, amongst the front-runners in this competition which is one of Lionel Messi’s last chances to win major international silverware.

Due to the Copa América 2021 format, the pressure is off in these group games.

There are two groups of five and the top four all advance to the quarter-finals.

Despite this, due to recent results, Argentina and Chile don’t like each-other too much so who will win at Estádio Olímpico Nilton Santos?

Prediction: Argentina 1-1 Chile

Chile have only won three of their last 37 meetings with Argentina, dating back to 1973 but, of course, two of those wins were Copa América Finals.

Lionel Messi has previously scored four times against Chile, all coming in separate World Cup Qualifying matches.

Alexis Sánchez netted against Argentina for the first time in the meeting on 3 June at Estadio Único Madre de Ciudades.
