The 2024-25 basketball season is just around the corner, which means the energy and excitement of student sections nationwide are about to hit full throttle.
Here are the top 10 student sections, as ranked by Andy Katz:
1. Duke
The Cameron Crazies always light up Cameron Indoor Stadium with their unmatched energy every time Duke takes the court. If you’re heading to a Duke game, make sure to arrive early so you can experience them in full force.
2. Purdue
The Paint Crew’s passion is felt the moment you step into Mackey Arena. The student section is named in honor of long-time head coach Matt Painter, who played for the Boilermakers before taking the helm.

3. Kansas
If you’ve ever stepped foot into Allen Fieldhouse, you know how electric the the student section. The tradition is to hold up custom-made newspapers while the opposing team’s starting lineup is announced. Once the introductions are complete, the students tear up the papers and toss them like confetti.
4. Michigan State
Every game at the Breslin Center is complete with the Izzone, the heart and soul of the crowd. Named after long-time head coach Tom Izzo, this student section makes every moment in the arena memorable for everyone in attendance.

5. Gonzaga
The Kennel Club is the heartbeat of the McCarthey Athletic Center. This student section rallies the crowd and creates an atmosphere like no other.

6. UConn
The Pack is known for their school spirit and unwavering support of UConn basketball, which makes the atmosphere electric every time the Huskies take the floor. The fans have had plenty to celebrate, too, as the Huskies have won consecutive national championships.
7. Auburn
This student section lives up to its name — “The Jungle” — with a wild and infectious spirit that creates an atmosphere so intense that it puts opponents on edge.
8. San Diego State
Known as “The Show,” this student section always delivers. It presents creative ideas that keep the crowd’s enthusiasm high. Notably, The Show is credited with helping to pioneer the use of Big Heads as a distraction technique for opponents while they shoot free throws.

9. Rutgers
Whether it’s games, tailgates or events, the Rutgers Riot Squad never fails to make an impression. Their zeal for Rutgers athletics and unrelenting energy are claimed to be significant factors in Rutgers’ rise.
10. Providence
The Friar Fanatics generate unmatched enthusiasm alongside their two mascots, Friar Dom and Huxley. This student section takes great pride in setting the tone for each game and is always early to establish the atmosphere.
Bonus: Kansas State
The K-State student section has a rich history that dates back to 1957. At Bramlage Coliseum, famously dubbed the “Octagon of Doom,” the students are always animated.
