Albania and Spain will pit their wits against each other in their Group B finale at Merkur Spiel-Arena on Monday.

La Roja defeated Italy 1-0 thanks to a strong performance that didn’t reflect in the scoreline, becoming the second team into the last-16 after hosts Germany.

Spain’s win on Matchday 2 not only secured their place in the knockout stage at Euro 2024 but also confirmed their status as Group B winners.

The three-time winners are now looking to win their opening three games of a European Championship for just a second time, albeit head coach Luis de la Fuente may decide to ring the changes and rest his stars against Albania.

Albania, meanwhile, are battling for their lives and must take points off Spain to keep their hopes alive, even as a best third-placed side, after picking up one point in their opening two games.

Albania vs. Spain lineups & team news

Albania head coach Sylvinho is expected to have access to a fully fit contingent for Monday’s pivotal Euro 2024 Group B clash against Spain in Dusseldorf.

Despite his exploits as a substitute in Albania’s previous game, veteran midfielder Klaus Gjasula may be kept on the bench, with Kristjan Asllani and Ylber Ramadani being the first-choice options, while fellow goalscorer Qazim Laci should continue in the advanced role.

Armando Broja was dropped from the attack, but Rey Manaj faces a fight to keep his place in the attacking trio alongside Jasir Asani and Nedim Bajrami.

Albania starting lineup (4-2-3-1): Strakosha —  Hysaj, Ajeti, Djimsiti, Mitaj —  Asllani, Ramadani; Asani, Laci, Bajrami — Manaj.

Having already guaranteed their progression to the last 16 as group winners, Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente is expected to make plenty of changes to his starting XI, although one of his changes will be enforced after Rodri picked up his second booking of the competition against Italy.

Real Madrid centre-back Nacho (muscular) and Real Betis forward Ayoze Perez (hamstring) will be sidelined as well.

Aymeric Laporte returned from his own injury absence last time out and is set to remain in Nacho’s absence, possibly along with Dani Vivian, with Robin Le Normand only a booking away from suffering Rodri’s fate of a one-match ban.

David Raya could replace Unai Simon in between the sticks, while Alejandro Grimaldo and 38-year-old veteran Jesus Navas are rotation options at fullback..

Martin Zubimendi is poised to fill in for Rodri, while his Real Sociedad teammate Mikel Merino and Villarreal’s Alex Baena could form a three-man midfielder behind a new-look attack featuring Ferran Torres and Mikel Oyarzabal on the flanks and Joselu down the middle.

Spain starting lineup (4-3-3): Raya — Navas, Vivian, Laporte, Grimaldo —  Merino, Zubimendi, Baena —  Torres, Joselu, Oyarzabal.

Albania vs. Spain prediction

  • Score prediction: Albania 1-3 Spain

Spain’s squad has so much strength in depth that De la Fuente could make a raft of changes and still see his team win comfortably in Dusseldorf, even against an Albanian side with a lot to play for.

Sylvinho’s team have put up impressive displays against Italy and Croatia. One argument could be that Spain will hold back in this game to prepare for the knockout stages, but the chances of that happening are slim, and even a second-string Roja should prove too hot to handle for Albania, who have won plenty of friends but are staring down the barrel of early elimination.
