Longevity and consistency are often looked at when evaluating the all-time greats and rightfully so. But here’s a look at the WNBA players with the best proven capabilities in terms of putting up gaudy stats even if they only did it once.
To get each player’s “monster stat” score we added together their single-season career-best averages for each of the five major categories (points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks). It didn’t matter if the career bests for different categories happened in different seasons. Assist averages were multiplied by 1.5 before being added to the total. There was a requirement of at least 10 games played in the season in which a career-best was counted.
We also included the ages of each player to give you an idea of which ones could be poised to improve on their score with a monster 2021.
1) Candace Parker
Chicago Sky
Monster stat score: 44.4
Age: 35
Parker averaged 6.3 assists over 16 games in 2015. That’s what put her over the top on this list. Always known for her versatility, the two-time MVP has also averaged over 10 rebounds twice and over 20 points once.
2) Diana Taurasi
Phoenix Mercury
Monster stat score: 43.1
Age: 38
Taurasi’s 25.3 points per game in 2006 still stands as the best single-season scoring average in WNBA history. She is also an excellent distributor with a career-best of 6.2 assists per game (2013). Despite being a guard her decent career highs of 5.7 rebounds per game (2009) and 1.4 blocks per game (twice) raised her score even higher.
3) Tina Charles
Washington Mystics
Monster stat score: 42
Age: 32
Charles’ scoring and rebounding numbers obviously put her high on this list. She also notched 3.8 assists per game (1.1 higher than her second-best effort) in 2016 and had 1.8 blocks per game in 2011.
4) Maya Moore
Minnesota Lynx
Monster stat score: 41.2
Age: 31
Status: sitting out season
No word of retirement yet for one of the most versatile scorers to ever play the game. Moore can fill out the rest of the stat sheet, too, averaging career bests of 8.1 rebounds (2014), 4.2 assists (2016) and 1.9 steals (twice).
5) Breanna Stewart
Seattle Storm
Monster stat score: 40.1
Age: 26
Though not the reigning WNBA MVP, Stewart is in the middle of her prime and is the best player in the world. Can she climb this list in 2021 with a scoring average greater than her career-best of 21.8 (2018)?
6) Liz Cambage
Las Vegas Aces
Monster stat score: 39.4
Age: 29
Cambage is the queen of short-term monster stats, having once scored a WNBA-record 53 points in a game. During that 2018 season she averaged 23 points per game. Her career-bests of 9.7 rebounds per game (2018) and 2.4 blocks per game (2013) also helped her out.
7) Brittney Griner
Phoenix Mercury
Monster stat score: 39.2
Age: 30
Griner has 0 MVP awards compared to draft mate Elena Delle Donne’s two, but appears ahead of the latter on this list. Her posting a ridiculous four blocks per game in 2015 is a big reason why.
8) Sylvia Fowles
Minnesota Lynx
Monster stat score: 39.2
Age: 35
Another scoring and rebounding star like Tina Charles, Fowles also averaged 2.6 blocks per game in 2010. Her 11.9 rebounds per game in 2018 is the WNBA’s single-season record.
9) Elena Delle Donne
Washington Mystics
Monster stat score: 38.4
Age: 31
Widely considered to be up there with Breanna Stewart as one of the best players in the world, Delle Donne’s rebounding numbers, like Brittney Griner’s, aren’t up there with Sylvia Fowles and Tina Charles. She’s also never averaged more than 2.3 assists per game. That’s why she’s not as high on this list as you might have expected her to be, but her 23.4 points per game in 2015 still got her into the Top 10.
10) Angel McCoughtry
Las Vegas Aces
Monster stat score: 38
Age: 34
McCoughtry’s best days may be behind her, but she’s obviously one of the best scorers of her generation. She also averaged 2.7 steals per game in 2013.
