Barcelona set to confirm that Ronald Koeman will remain in charge for next season

Laporta’s Koeman conundrum

Whether or not Ronald Koeman would still be in charge next season has been a question of great curiosity for the Blaugrana faithful.

Despite winning the Copa del Rey earlier this season, Barca’s failure to progress past the last 16 in the Champions League and their capitulation at the end of the La Liga season, handing the title to Atletico Madrid, had seemingly put Koeman’s position under threat.

New President Joan Laporta took charge earlier in 2021 and some reports suggested he may want a new coach to begin his vision of reviving the European behemoth.

“Ronald is a coach who we did not appoint, so we need these conversations to be sure we all share the same idea of the new Barca team,” he said.

Koeman was brought in when former president Josip Maria Bartomeu was still leading the club.

Laporta had been the custodian of the club during the years of dominance under Pep Guardiola and was compelled to return after seeing the Catalan side fall further and further away from the side it once was.

Koeman to remain

However, despite all the doubt and arguably against the odds, it is expected that Koeman will indeed continue as Barcelona head coach next season.

Spanish outlet COPE’s reporter Victor Navarro tweeted out confirming that a meeting will take place where the Dutchman’s job will be confirmed.

‘Koeman Day in Barcelona. At 2:00 p.m. board of directors where he will be ratified as Barça coach,’ he wrote.

Whether or not he continues beyond then is yet to be seen. Progression in the Champions League and a La Liga title would go some way to helping his cause.

The club are already moving to secure some savvy deals with Gini Wijnaldum and Memphis Depay in discussions and Emerson, Sergio Aguero and Eric Garcia having already been announced.
