With the widespread use of technology in our everyday lives, it was only a matter of time until the technology was introduced into the sports world as a means of perfection. Besides changing the equipment of sports, there has been a large move in recent years to instant replay. This has come as a form of checking the umpires’ or referees’ calls in the game since there is always a human factor of error. These errors can also result in large changes to the game, which could cost people millions of dollars, let alone enrage the team’s fan base.
Currently, instant replay is playing a large role in American sports, primarily football, and basketball. Football was one of the earliest sports to implement instant replay for both the fan’s amusement and for officials to review calls. With the fast pace of sports, getting up to go to the bathroom or simply looking down at your phone could easily result in you missing something big. With instant replay, all you have to do is look up at the big screen to get a good idea of what you missed and catch up on the amazing play.
Now instant replay has yet to be widely implemented in soccer, which is exactly what we want to talk to you about today. It was simply important to understand the groundwork that went into instant replay before leading up to this point. We first understand that instant replay would be more difficult in soccer since the sport is always moving so there are never any breaks besides halftime. However, we have done some research with fans of the sport to create some ideas as to how instant replay could be better incorporated into the sport.
First off, we understand that currently instant replay is mainly used to review goals or to simply show goals that players have just scored. However, we think it would be beneficial to possibly have one scoreboard constantly showing instant replays such as dribbling moves or key tackles that just occurred. One scoreboard could consistently be showing the game live, while the other could be showing instant replays of what just happened. This way everyone can stay involved in the game if they missed something, or if they just wanted to see a sweet move again. Now of course we are by no means going to have the power to change instant replay in soccer, these are simply our ideas that we think could help further instant replay in soccer.
Without a doubt, instant replay is the way of the future if not one of the biggest things in sports today. Now we recognize that it is difficult to do with a soccer match, but with the idea of one scoreboard constantly showing instant replays we feel like this is a good solution. Feel free to let us know your ideas of instant replay in soccer and it would be cool to see if they were implemented someday!
