Ben Cabango admits Swansea City’s emphatic victory over Blackburn Rovers has alleviated the pressure on the players after a “mad month” at the club.
Goals from Zan Vipotnik, Myles Peart-Harris and Liam Cullen ensured Alan Sheehan’s second stint as caretaker boss following the sacking of Luke Williams got off to a winning start against Rovers.
And club captain Cabango, 24, feels the triumph came at a perfect time as Swansea secured a first home win of 2025.
“It feels like a lot of pressure’s been relieved after this win, I think it’s come at a great time and the manner of the win is massive,” said the Wales defender.
“There’s no hiding away from it, it’s been a tough couple of weeks with the results and with the gaffer going.
“But today was just a quality performance all round from the start, the fans were behind us and everything was so positive. To come away with a 3-0 win, there’s no better feeling.”
Swansea scored three goals in a game for the first time in 2025, and Cabango was quick to praise interim boss Sheehan following his impact on the training ground after Williams’ exit.
“Football is just a mad game,” added Cabango.
“Sheehan’s come in and the whole week he’s been positive, he’s spoken about us being on the front foot.
“We created a lot of chances and we were clinical today which is a good thing and at the back we were solid as well. It was just a good all round performance.”
Following former captain Matt Grimes’ switch to Championship rivals Coventry City in January, Cabango was announced as the club’s new skipper.
Williams then left the Swansea.com Stadium on 17 February after a run of eight defeats in 10 games since the turn of the year.
But Cabango says he is relishing the role of leading the squad after what has been a turbulent spell at the club.
“It’s been a mad month, in January with Grimesy going, it was a shock to everyone and then the manager leaving,”said Cabango.
“I think as a team we’ve just stuck together. Today it shows we’ve got a good team, even though it’s been a tough couple of weeks, we really stood tall today and gave a good performance.”
On captaincy, Cabango said: “I think I’ve always been a leader, I’m always vocal on the pitch and I try to help others.
“There’s a bit more responsibility, I want to be the person they look to and make sure the standards are right constantly.”
