Notre Dame football saw its backup quarterback, Steve Angeli, enter the College Football Playoff semifinal game against Penn State Thursday.

Angeli entered after starting quarterback Riley Leonard left late in the second quarter with an apparent concussion.

Steve Angeli dominated the 2023 Sun Bowl

Angeli has made one start in his career during Notre Dame’s bowl game to end last season.

He excelled, finishing 15-of-29 passing for 232 yards and three touchdowns in a 40-8 victory over Oregon State in the Sun Bowl. It helped the Irish finish 10-3 on the season.

Angeli has made appearances in several games

It’s usually in late-game situations when the contests are no longer in doubt, but Angeli has seen action throughout this season.

The most snaps he played came in the 66-7 blowout over Purdue Sept. 14. He threw two touchdown passes late in the win, which were the first two passing touchdowns of the season for Notre Dame.

Angeli also threw a touchdown pass against Florida State in that 52-3 victory Nov. 9.

For his career, Angeli is 52-of-72 passing with 728 yards, 10 touchdowns and one interception.

Angeli was a sought-after recruit

Angeli was one of the better quarterback recruits in the Class of 2022.

A four-star prospect, Rivals had Angeli ranked him as the No. 21 pro-style quarterback in the country. The Westfield, New Jersey, native was a consensus top 10 player from the state in high school as well. He led Bergen Catholic to a Group A New Jersey State Championship his senior season.
