The Chicago Cubs did not meet expectations in 2024. They could look to make some big additions in hopes of winning the National League Central.

While listing teams that should go “all-out” to get Zac Gallen, FanSided’s Michael Brakebill named the Cubs as suitor for the Arizona Diamondbacks ace.

“Hoyer has all the pieces necessary to pull off a blockbuster without depleting the farm,” wrote Brakebill. “Gallen is the perfect fallback option if they miss on Roki Sasaki or if a trade with Seattle doesn’t come to fruition.”

The Cubs farm system is one of the best in the league. They have the prospect capital to get a player like Gallen. Gallen was an All-Star in 2023. Last season he made 28 starts with a 3.65 ERA. Spotrac projects Gallen to sign a six-year, 138 million deal in free agency. 2025 is an arbitration year for Gallen.

“The Chicago Cubs have reached a point where it may be do or die for Team President Jed Hoyer to deliver a postseason appearance to the city,” wrote Brakebill. “Chairman Tom Ricketts has gone on record stating he is not looking to extend Hoyer before the start of the 2025 season, his contract year, but instead, see how next season plays out, and go from there.”

Adding Gallen to the rotation along with Justin Steele and Shota Imanaga could be the type of move that wins the National League Central, and potentially saves Hoyer’s job.
