Trainer Cherie DeVaux earned her first win at the Breeders’ Cup meeting when MORE THAN LOOKS (c, 4, More Than Ready–Ladies’ Privilege, by Harlan’s Holiday) caught fire in the final furlong and outsprinted top local chance Johannes (Nyquist) and Godolphin’s favored Notable Speech (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) to take out the GI Breeders’ Cup Mile at Del Mar. Off at odds just shy of 7-1, More Than Looks was outfooted as expected as Goliad (War Front) led from Japan’s Ten Happy Rose (Jpn) (Epiphaneia {Jpn}) through a first quarter mie in :22.73. Ridden quietly from the tail by Jose Ortiz, More Than Looks still had it all to do entering the final three furlongs, and Ortiz wisely tracked Notable Speech into the final two furlongs. Switched out for clear sailing, More Than Looks clearly tried to lug in on multiple occasions, but he was straightened up with time ticking away and managed to finish off the task at hand, becoming an eighth Breeders’ Cup winner for the much-missed More Than Ready. Johannes won the place photo over Notable Speech, while Ten Happy Rose was a courageous fourth. Sales history: $135,000 Ylg ’21 KEESEP.
