After a year away from the game of football, Aaron Rodgers’ return to the gridiron is here. How apt that it is in the Bay Area of all places, a few hours away from his hometown.
As far as California kids go, Rodgers is one of the state’s most successful. He has four MVPs, four First-team All-Pro nods, a Super Bowl title and a place on the NFL’s all-decade team for the 2010s. At 40 years old, the Cal-Berkley alum has little more to prove in football’s top-flight. His Achilles tear last year complicated things, however. In 2024, he’ll start anew, hoping to bring the Jets to glory for the first time in six decades.
If Rodgers is able to perform near his peak, New York could find itself in a position of strength once the dust all settles on the 2024 campaign. For now, though, it’s all about Game No. 1: a road duel with the 49ers.
San Francisco put forth a wondrous effort throughout the 2023 season, concluding with a Super Bowl 58 berth. The Niners didn’t quite run through the finish line — Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce and Chris Jones combined to shatter fans of a Gold Rush disposition.
Nevertheless, with San Fran’s roster set and secure — longtime holdouts Brandon Aiyuk and Trent Williams agreed to new contracts with the team on the dawn of the regular season — Kyle Shanahan’s squad seems as threatening as anyone to contend for a Lombardi Trophy.
