Novak Djokovic advanced to the third round of US Open on Wednesday after his opponent Laslo Djere retired due to injury. The defending champion was up 6-4, 6-4, 2-0 on a humid evening under the roof of the Arthur Ashe Stadium when Djere decided to quit.
After losing the opening set, Djere battled to a strong position and held break points to take a 5-2 lead in the second set. But Djokovic weathered the storm to win three games on the trot. At 4-5, the 29-year-old received medical treatment for what looked like an abdominal injury.
“It’s not what we want. It’s not what the crowd wants, to see a walkover,” Djokovic said in a court side interview. “But he obviously had an injury that took him out of the Tour for some time and he is struggling to come back physically to this level. He’s such a good player, especially in these conditions.”
The 37-year-old is chasing a record 25th Grand Slam title in New York. Though he had a modest Grand Slam season, Djokovic proved he’s not going away any time soon by winning gold at the Paris Olympics.

US Open 2024 schedule
The first round of matches in both the ATP and WTA singles competitions begins on Monday, August 26, with the order of play on most days starting from 11:00 a.m. EDT in the first, second, third and fourth (last 16) rounds.
Both days of quarterfinals will begin at 12:00 p.m. EDT, while the WTA and ATP semifinals over the following two evenings begin at 7:00 p.m. EDT and 3:00 p.m. EDT respectively.
