101 heat index shuts down Monmouth Park horse racing for a day

OCEANPORT – Monmouth Park officials canceled thoroughbred horse racing for Friday with the area heat index reaching 101 late in the morning; the index measures how hot it feels to the human body when air temperature and relative humidity are combined.

The National Weather Service forecast for coastal Monmouth County shows a high of 89 degrees with a chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 5 p.m. Some of the storms could be severe, the forecast says.

Racing is scheduled to resume Saturday at Monmouth Park.
