A man suspected of shooting and killing a Florida high school football coach has been arrested by the Miami-Dade Police Department, according to local news stations.
Keon Bernard Smith, a quarterback coach at Norland High School, was shot around June 3 around 1 a.m. outside the apartment complex of his girlfriend, Brittney Grant. Police said that Lance Rolle, 39, was the ex-boyfriend of Grant and believe he shot Smith before fleeing, according to CBS News Miami and Local10.com.
According to a police report obtained by Local10, Rolle arrived at the complex uninvited and knocked on the bedroom window. When Rolle and Grant spoke, Rolle said Smith was in bed. Local10 reported:
“The report states Rolle then forcibly entered through the window and pointed a gun at Smith and ordered him and Grant to leave the apartment.”
Smith had been married to his wife, India Smith, for 24 years. After the arrest took place, she spoke with WSVN News, saying she was encouraged by the arrest.
“Keon was an awesome man. He was an awesome husband. He was my friend. He was the father to my children,” she said. “It’s been extremely hard for myself and my family.”
The two have eight children and a pair of grandchildren, according to NBC Miami.
“He was a good man, he was a good man,” India Smith said. “He doesn’t have the opportunity to coach his final son who want to play football.”
At Norland, Smith helped lead a team that went 14-1 last season and finished No. 16 in the USA TODAY Super 25 national rankings.
