For 2023, the Breeders’ Cup World Championships return to Santa Anita in Arcadia, California. Pre-entries closed on Monday October 23 for all the races and were released on Wednesday October 25 with a total of 205 horses, matching last year’s number, including 43 Europeans, 9 Japanese, and 1 Argentinian entry. Final entries will close on Monday October 30 and post positions will be drawn at 4:45pm PT at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium. Below are links to the contenders for each race along with lots of other information.
Four Breeders’ Cup Champions from 2022 are back to defend their titles: Caravel (Turf Sprint), Cody’s Wish (Dirt Mile), Elite Power (Sprint), and Goodnight Olive (Filly and Mare Sprint). In addition, 46 pre-entered horses earned automatic starting positions into the World Championships races through the Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series.
Drew Fleming, President and CEO of Breeders’ Cup Limited said, “Once again, an outstanding group of horses has been pre-entered for this year’s Breeders’ Cup World Championships and we look forward to two days of fantastic racing at Santa Anita Park. The competition has never been stronger and the prestige of entering the Breeders’ Cup winner’s circle has never been higher. We want to thank the talented men and women across the globe who provide the ecosystem of care that enables these magnificent Thoroughbreds to compete at the top of their game. We also thank our extraordinary host, 1/ST Racing and their beautiful venue, Santa Anita Park, and to recognize our breeders and nominators for their commitment to help underwrite the World Championships. We also want to thank the bettors and fans around the world for their constant support. We can’t wait to gather next weekend to watch the world’s best Thoroughbreds put on a spectacular show.”
The 40th Breeders’ Cup will have a total of 14 Championship races (all Grade 1) spread over two days of racing with $31 million in purse money on the line. Friday November 3rd is billed as “Future Stars Friday” featuring all 5 Championship races for juveniles on the same card, starting with the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint (G1) and highlighted by the $2 million FanDuel Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1). Saturday November 4th will have nine Grade 1 races for older horses headlined by the $6 million Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) at 1 1/4 miles, however for the first time in Championships history, the Classic will not be the finale; instead, the Turf Sprint and the Sprint will run after the Classic. The Championships are being held at Santa Anita for a record 11th time, the first in 1986 and most recently in 2019. Santa Anita hosted the 10th, 20th, 30th, and now the 40th anniversary runnings.
