2023 Yearling Sales Stakes At Woodbine

On Sunday, Woodbine hosted its annual Yearling Sales Stakes day, stakes races restricted to Canadian-breds who went through Woodbine’s sales ring as yearlings or weanlings. However unlike in past years, starting in 2021 the number of stakes offered was reduced to just 4, two for the juveniles and two for the 3-year-old divisions, all contested as Tapeta main track sprints. Conditions were typical for late August in Southern Ontario, with partly cloudy skies and a race time temperature of 22.1 C (71.8 F). The 2023 CTHS Ontario Canadian Premier Yearling Sale takes place this Wednesday, August 30 starting at noon in the Woodbine sales pavilion.

My Boy Prince wins the Simcoe Stakes

Closing out the weekend’s stakes action, the $200,000 Simcoe Stakes presented by bet365 featured a field of 11 two-year-old males sprinting 6 1/2 furlongs. My Boy Prince, a maiden winner at second asking, was sent off as the 1-5 favorite over 14-1 Valyrian Sky, still winless in 2 starts, and 15-1 Yacht Boy, 4th in the Victoria Stakes. Jockey Sahin Civaci sent My Boy Prince to the lead out of the chute through fractions of 23.01 and 45.73 while pressed by 17-1 fourth choice Summer Commander and stalked by Valyrian Sky and Yacht Boy. Turning for home, My Boy Prince left the field behind, drawing off to a 14 length victory over Yacht Boy in 1:15.48. It was another 1 3/4 lengths back to Summer Commander third.

I like to play the break with these types of races. There could be some cheap speed that might try to go really fast, so I broke out really well.”

Souper Sinclair wins the Algoma Stakes

The $100,000 Algoma Stakes presented by HPIbet featured a field of 7 three-year-old fillies sprinting 7 furlongs. Thunder Bay Stakes 4th place finisher Souper Sinclair was sent off as the even-money favorite over 3-1 second choice Lady Urus, winless since her debut, and 5-1 third choice Rocket Riley off her maiden win at second asking. Jockey Rachel Slevinsky sent 47-1 longest shot Tamana to the lead through fractions of 24.06 and 48.66 while pressed by 11-2 fourth choice Zana and stalked by 33-1 Where’s Samnabailey. Into the lane, Tamama tired allowing Zana to inherit the lead through 3/4 in 1:12.80 but favorite Souper Sinclair, 6th early under Jose Campos, came out 4 wide and rallied to win by a nose in 1:25.03. It was 2 lengths back to 11-1 Great Kate third.

Rapid Test wins the Elgin Stakes

The $100,000 Elgin Stakes presented by HPIbet featured a field of 7 three-year-old males sprinting 7 furlongs. Allowance winner Rapid Test was sent off as the even-money choice over 7-2 second choice El Cohete, 3rd in allowance company last out, and 9-2 third choice Kinetic Stone, 4th in the Lake Huron Stakes before winning an allowance last out. Jockey Ryan Munger sent Kinetic Stone to the front out of the chute through fractions of 22.41 and 45.06 while pressed by 5-1 fourth choice Forest Buzz and stalked by El Cohete. Into the lane Kinetic Stone tired allowing Forest Buzz to inherit the lead through 3/4 in 1:10.01. Favorite Rapid Test, 6th early under Kazushi Kimura, saved ground on the turn then came out for room and rallied to win going away by 1 1/4 lengths over late-running 14-1 Legal Catch in 1:23.10. It was another 1 1/2 lengths back to Forest Buzz third.

Hurricane Clair wins the Muskoka Stakes

Kicking off the stakes quartet, the $200,000 Muskoka Stakes presented by bet365 featured a field of 11 two-year-old fillies sprinting 6 1/2 furlongs. Hurricane Clair, third in her debut last out, was sent off as the 6-5 favorite over 4-1 second choice Jimmy’s Affair off her debut win and 5-1 third choice You Be the Judge, 3rd in her debut last out. Jockey Kazushi Kimura sent 13-2 fourth choice Vandoo to the front out of the chute through fractions of 22.65 and 46.15 while pressed by You Be the Judge and stalked by 45-1 Different Drum and 12-1 Saucy Name. Turning for home Vandoo continued to lead through 3/4 in 1:11.96 but tired in the stretch. Favorite Hurricane Clair, 8th early under Sahin Civaci after stumbling at the start, came out 5 wide on the turn and powered clear to win by 5 1/4 lengths over Saucy Name in 1:18.46. It was a head back to Vandoo third.
