Starting White Sox pitcher Vince Velasquez was perfect through 2.0 innings pitched, and managed to keep the Tigers scoreless through the first two outs of the third inning, setting up relief pitcher Davis Martin.

Andrew Vaughn opened up the 3rd inning with a double, shortly followed up by a single hit by Luis Robert. After keeping out of the heat in his makeshift tent, José Abreu hit his first RBI of the game. Josh Harrison contributed another hit to score more insurance runs for the White Sox. The White Sox were leading 9-0 by the end of the 5th inning.
