This season was a major disappointment. Coming off a “playoff” appearance in the shortened 2020 season, the Marlins made very little off-season moves and seemingly tried to run the same 31-29 team from 2020 back out there. It didn’t work, the lack of depth killed the team at the beginning of the season when a few of the every day starters went down, and the team couldn’t recover from then on. They ended up trading one of the best hitters in the league (Marte) and one of the best sluggers in the league (Duvall) at the deadline and finished with a 67-95 record on the year.

All that being said, some positive things came from the final month of the season as rookie Jesus Sanchez tore it up all month long, and fellow rookies Lewin Diaz and Bryan De La Cruz showed promise with solid ends to the season as well. Sandy Alcantara was great not only in September, but the entire 2nd half of the season as he proved to be one of the best pitchers in baseball. Possibly the most encouraging thing about 2021 was the breakout season from rookie and potential future face of the franchise Jazz Chisholm Jr, who put together a strong season start to finish with 18 homers and 53 RBI’s mainly from the leadoff spot.

As we move into the 2021 off-season owner Derek Jeter and GM Kim Ng have said they’re willing to spend big money for the first time to improve the roster going into the 2022 season. The hope is that they stick to their word and can build around the elite young pitching the Marlins already have in order to make their first legit playoff run since 2003. This may be a lot to ask, but its expected from this ownership group going into what is now their 5th season running the organization.
