2022 Kentucky Derby Future Wager

Pool One of the 2022 Kentucky Derby Future Wager is now closed. As expected the field of all other 3-year-old colts and geldings wound up the favorite at only 3-5 odds. Saturday’s Kentucky Jockey Club (G2) winner Smile Happy was the lowest odds individual horse at 8-1, with Champagne (G2) winner Jack Christopher next at 10-1. The total amount wagered during Pool One was $326,448 which was a 30% increase over last year’s November pool. $263,008 was bet into the win pool and $$63,440 was bet into the exacta pool. You can view the exacta will-pays here. There was also the Sire Future Wager pool this year where you can wager on the sire of the next Derby winner. In this pool, the field of all other sires was the favorite at 7-2, with Runhappy the second choice at 7-1 and Gun Runner next at 9-1. Just $50,305 was bet in this pool between the win wagers and exactas, up slightly from last year.
Note that any horses currently trained by Bob Baffert are excluded and cannot earn points toward entering the Derby. If they change trainers, then they can start earning points and be included in later pools.
The Kentucky Derby Future Wager is a two-dollar minimum bet to win only with no refunds if your horse doesn’t start in the race with both win and exacta wagering available. Pool 2 is scheduled for January 21-23, Pool 3 is scheduled for February 11-15. Pool 4 is set for March 11-13 and will also include the single Kentucky Oaks Future Wager pool. The fifth and final pool is set for March 31-April 2. The 147th running of the Kentucky Derby is currently scheduled for Saturday, May 1. Full rules and info for the wager is available here.
