The 2021 Breeders’ Cup World Championships ended on Saturday with nine races, all with year-end championship implications, four of which were conducted over the 7 furlong Jimmy Durante Turf Course in the infield. Similar to Friday, conditions were cool with partly cloudy skies, minimal wind, and temperatures in the mid 60’s, with the course firm.

Irad Ortiz Jr. won the Shoemaker Award for the fourth year in a row, off three wins (Juvenile Turf Sprint, Turf Sprint, Dirt Mile), a second (Classic), and a third (Dirt Mile). The Award goes to the jockey who won the most races in the 14 World Championship races this weekend with the tiebreaker being a 10-3-1 point system for second- through fourth-place finishes.

Del Mar president and CEO Josh Rubinstein said, “Our team at Del Mar was thrilled to host this year’s renewal of the Breeders’ Cup. We want to extend our congratulations to all of this weekend’s participants. They put on an amazing display of world-class competition.”

Yibir wins the Turf

The $4 million Longines Breeders’ Cup Turf (G1) features older horses going 1 1/2 miles around 3 turns of the turf. After efending champion Tarnawa was sent off as the 2-1 favorite off 2nd place finishes in the Irish Champion Stakes (G1) and Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (G1). In to challenge her included 11-2 second choice Walton Street, winner of the Pattison Canadian International (G1), and 8-1 third choice Gufo, winner of the Sword Dancer (G1) but 3rd in the Joe Hirsch Turf Classic (G1).

Jockey Jose Ortiz sent 16-1 Tribhuvan to a clear lead through fractions of 23.76, 48.38, 1:12.41, and 1:36.76 while pressed by 51-1 Acclimate and stalked by 55-1 longest shot Channel Maker. Into the stretch Channel Maker took over the lead through 10f in 2:02.30. 17-2 fourth choice Yibir, 13th early under William Buick, circled the field into stretch and rallied to win by 1/2 a length over 9-1 Broome in a new course record time of 2:25.90, lowering the previous record by 29/100. It was another 1 1/2 lengths back to 10-1 Teona third, while favorite Tarvana failed to rally finishing 11th beaten 10 1/2 lengths.

The luck has gone my way this year. I couldn’t pull him up after the line as he finished that strong. He’s a very special horse.”

There was a lot of pace in the race but I didn’t know what my horse, how he would be able to, would react. He’s a bit of a complex character and you saw him at Belmont last time where he dropped himself out and I had that scenario in my head that he might be a bit rank, and anyway, he broke well, and he pulled hard.”

Space Blues wins the Mile

The $2 million FanDuel Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1) presented by PDJF featured a field of 13 older horses (after 3 scratches) going 1 mile on the turf. Prix de la Foret (G1) and City of York (G2) winner Space Blues was sent off as the 2-1 favorite over 3-1 second choice Mo Forza, winner of the Del Mar Mile (G2) and City of Hope Mile (G2), and 9-1 third choice Mother Earth, 5th in the Queen Elizabeth II (G1).

Jockey Umberto Rispoli sent 10-1 fourth choice Smooth Like Strait to the lead first time by through fractions of 23.51, 47.38, and 1:11.02 while pressed by 14-1 Blowout and stalked by Space Blues. Turning for home Smooth Like Strait continued to lead through 7f in 1:22.77 but Space Blues wore him down in the final 1/16 to win by 1/2 a length in 1:34.01. It was another length back to 25-1 Ivar third.

Space Blues traveled to America very well and Charlie has been delighted with all of our horses coming into the races. We know how tough it is to come here and everything needs to pan out for you to win. He’s a great little horse and I don’t think he’s had the recognition he deserves. A mile round here suits him down to the ground. I was a bit nervous going into the race as I wanted to give the horse what he deserved.”

Loves Only You wins the Filly and Mare Turf

The $2 million Maker’s Mark Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf (G1) featured a field of 12 older fillies and mares going 1 3/8 miles on the turf. Flower Bowl (G1) and Glens Falls (G2) winner War Like Goddess was sent off as the 2-1 favorite over 3-1 second choice Love, winner of the Prince of Wales’s (G1) but 3rd in the Juddmonte International (G1), and 4-1 third choice Loves Only You, winner of the Queen Elizabeth II Cup (G1) but 2nd in the Sapporo Kinen (G2) last out.

Jockey Umberto Rispoli sent 8-1 fourth choice Going to Vegas to the front first time by through fractions of 24.26, 47.83, 1:13.06, and 1:38.20 while pressed by 33-1 Dogtag and stalked by 10-1 Pocket Square. Into the lane for the final time Going to Vegas tired badly as favorite War Like Goddess, 12th early, moved up to gain the lead through 10f in 2:02.46. Loves Only You, 5th early under Yuga Kawada, came through between horses late to win by 1/2 a length over late-closing 30-1 My Sister Nat in 2:13.87. It was another head back to War Like Goddess third.

It’s a dream come true for Japanese horse racing history. I’d love to come back to the Breeders’ Cup at Keeneland next year and do the same thing, to win!”

Golden Pal wins the Turf Sprint

The $1 million Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint (G1) featured a field of 12 older horses sprinting 5 furlongs around one turn. Last year’s Juvenile Turf Sprint winner Golden Pal was sent off as the 5-2 favorite off his Woodford Stakes (G2) win. In to challenge him included 9-2 second choice Lieutenant Dan, winner of the Green Flash Handicap (G3) and Eddie D (G2), and 13-2 third choice Emaraaty Ana, winner of the Betfair Sprint Cup (G1) after finishing 2nd in the Nunthorpe (G1)

Jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. hustled Golden Pal to a clear lead immediately and he set fractions of 22.25 and 43.91 while chased by Lieutenant Dan and 17-1 Caravel. In the lane Golden Pal continued to hold his lead, cruising for the final furlong to win by 1 1/4 lengths over Lieutenant Dan in 55.22. It was a long 3 1/2 lengths back to 28-1 Charmaine’s Mia third.

Bruce Headley, a great trainer, once told me when he had Kona Gold, ‘stay in there long enough and you’ll get one as good as this.’ I hope everyone in horse racing has a horse like this, as special as he is. He’s just fast. He’s mature and he has so much upstairs, as well. He has so much natural ability. What a horse.”

Immediately before the Championship races, the $300,000 Goldikova Stakes (G2) featured older fillies and mares going 1 mile on the turf. Jockey Kent Desormeaux sent 11-10 favorite Princess Grace to the lead first time by through fractions of 23.22, 47.55, and 1:11.34 while pressed by 25-1 Glesga Girl and stalked by 5-1 third choice Zofelle. Turning for home Princess Grace continued to lead through 7f in 1:23.18 but 5-2 second choice Going Global, 5th early under Flavien Prat, rallied 5 wide to win by 1 1/2 lengths over Zofelle in 1:34.57. It was another 1/2 length back to Princess Grace third.

Winning jockey Flavien Prat said, “We were running well all the way. She was comfortable. When I took her out she showed me a good turn of foot. When she finished she still had something in the tank.” Trainer Phil D’Amato added, “I loved the position all the way around. And when Flavien swung her outside in the stretch she really hit a great stride. This is a big step up, going against older fillies and mares, and she handled it beautifully.”
