Some of White’s quality “need to be coming to Arsenal” says former league title winner

Arsenal’s chase for Ben White

Arsenal have been looking to acquire the services of a centre-back for the duration of the early part of the transfer window.

The Athletic reported there was interested in Bayer Leverkusen defender Edmond Tapsoba and Sevilla’s French international Jules Koundé.

Arsenal are seriously interested in Bayer Leverkusen’s 22-year-old centre-half Edmond Tapsoba. The Burkina Faso international has played predominantly as a left-sided central defender in Germany, but is right-footed and was deployed on that side for former club Vitoria Guimaraes. In reality, he is unlikely to be available for much less than Kounde.

However, when these two options quickly became out of the club’s reach, a bid was made for Brighton’s Ben White.

White was recently called up to the England national side for the European Championships this summer thanks his versatility and strong performances in the Premier League.

It is clear that Mikel Arteta wants players who can play more than one position, whom are young, homegrown and with a high ceiling for development.

However, there has been much debate as to whether the figures associated with White correlate to his quality amongst the Arsenal fan base.

Seaman’s White approval

Despite the apprehension from fans, former Arsenal goalkeeper David Seaman is fully supporting the idea of White.

Having played behind some historic back lines for Arsenal, it is fair to say Seamen knows a good defender when he sees one.

Seamen says that a player of the Brighton man’s quality should be being targeted by the club. With references to signings made by Arsene Wenger which were risks who turned out to be world beaters.

“People of that (White’s) quality need to be coming to Arsenal,” said Seaman.

“I think we’re going down that route of players where they have young, promising with careers ahead of them. The days of signing marquee players – that are right on it now – Arsenal will struggle with that as they’re not in Europe.

“The key players don’t just want to play in Europe, they want to play in the Champions League.

“At the moment, Arsenal are nowhere near that and they need to restructure their transfer policy.

“Arsene Wenger used to pick out people and he’d sign them and we’d asked: ‘Who’s that?’

“Then they turned out to be Thierry Henry!”

Whether or not White arrives at Arsenal remains to be seen but he certainly has the backing of this club legend.
