The Alabama high school football season begins in just a few weeks.

Ahead of the season, The Tuscaloosa News has listed some of the top players in the area per position. The five following players, however, were listed as athletes by their coaches, meaning they are versatile players that can play and excel in multiple positions across the field.

Here are five Tuscaloosa area athletes to watch during the 2024 high school football season.

Jay Lagrone

Bibb County, Sr.

Why chosen: Lagrone enters his first season at Bibb County, playing at Maplesville last season. He is expected to play a big role for the Choctaws, being listed as a running back and outside linebacker per Maxpreps.

Christian Davis

American Christian Academy, Jr.

Why chosen: The 5-foot-9, 170-pound Davis is what coach Cody Martin says will be a lightning bolt all over the field, adding explosion to the offense from several different places.

CJ Hutchins

Tuscaloosa County, Jr.

Why chosen: The 5-10, 180-pound Hutchins carried the ball 120 times for 820 yards and seven touchdowns in 2023 while also recording six receptions for 110 yards.

Miles Madden

Paul W. Bryant, So.

Why chosen: As a freshman, Madden contributed on both sides of the ball for the Stampede. He had 21 receptions for 278 yards and five touchdowns while also producing 48 tackles, three sacks, two tackles for loss and one interception.

Kalix Smith

Greensboro, Jr.

Why chosen: The 6-1, 180-pound Smith sees time at wide receiver, quarterback and outside linebacker for the Raiders, who are entering their second season under coach Deon Washington.
