The Bills were walking off the field at Highmark Stadium victorious after a massive win over the Chiefs the last time we saw them. Josh Allen instantly became the MVP favorite, and Buffalo moved into second place in the AFC, just a half-game behind Kansas City.

After a week of rest, the Bills are back at it, hosting the reeling 49ers under the “Sunday Night Football” lights.

Week 13’s interconference showdown qualifies as a borderline “must-win” for the Niners, who enter this game 5-6 and on a two-game losing streak. San Francisco is on the outside looking in of the NFC playoff picture, sitting in 11th place after tiebreakers. Fortunately for the 49ers, they’re just one game back in a tightly contested NFC West, so a postseason berth is still well within reach.

The key for San Francisco will be getting healthy. Brock Purdy (shoulder) missed last week’s loss vs. Green Bay and was limited in practice leading up to Sunday night. Pro Bowlers Nick Bosa (hip, oblique) and Trent Williams (knee, heel) also sat out, and both are headed toward missing another game.

Star LB Fred Warner revealed earlier in the week that he’s been playing with a fractured ankle since Week 4, and Christian McCaffrey still doesn’t seem 100 percent after his season-opening Achilles’ issue. Throw in a season-ending injury to Brandon Aiyuk (knee) and IR stints for Talanoa Hufanga (wrist) and Dre Greenlaw (Achilles), among others, and you have a nightmare season by the Bay.

Ultimately, none of that matters when the ball kicks off on Sunday night, and San Francisco will have to find a way to compete with a Bills squad that’s won six straight. To make matters worse for San Francisco, a severe winter storm is bearing down on Buffalo, potentially covering the field with snow and creating bone-chilling temperatures that would make life miserable for any visiting team, never mind one from California.

Regardless, the Niners must find a way to stay in the playoff hunt, and the Bills must handle their business to remain in the mix for the AFC’s top seed and lone bye.

You can’t say the NFL doesn’t offer compelling theater, and Week 13’s “Sunday Night Football” matchup promises to leave one fan base questioning whether their team can get it done in the postseason.

8:30 p.m.: The Niners are showcasing verve on the ground, with both Christian McCaffrey and Jordan Mason collecting first downs. San Francisco has brashly breached into the red zone. It’ll need to find its footing in red zone play. Perhaps George Kittle will get involved?

8:26 p.m.: San Francisco’s defense holds firm on its first possession of the game. The Niners force a three-and-out to set San Francisco up in fairly ideal position to start the affair.

8:15 p.m.: It’s wet. It’s wild. And we’re off! Jake Moody sends one deep and the game has begun! The Bills will possess the ball first.

7:45 p.m.: Purdy is back under center for the Niners. His return could prove the difference for a San Francisco side that finds itself on the outside looking in of postseason contention.

7:15 p.m.: Plenty of madmen on the field for tonight’s contest, including one Dawson Knox, who decided to pull up to warmups sporting a sleeveless muscle tee. Here’s hoping his skillset is as resilient as the cold seems to be.

7:05 p.m.: And here’s how the Bills are looking for Sunday night’s contest. Keon Coleman will be sidelined for the third straight week after absorbing a wrist ailment.

7:00 p.m.: Tonight’s inactives are starting to bubble up across social media. Here’s a look at those missing out on the action for the Niners, who will bring Brock Purdy back into the fold after a brief absence:

6:45 p.m.: Winter may have swallowed up Highmark Stadium. It doesn’t seem that bothers Mack Hollins too much. The Bills pass-catcher recreated his classic pre-game routine — bare feet and all — atop the tundra-like surface.

6:30 p.m.: In case you’re wondering, it’s a winter wonderland here at Highmark Stadium.
