There is likely to be some drama in the PGA Tour event this week, as the 2021 World Wide Technology Championship tees off Thursday in Playa del Carmen, Mexico. The event at El Camaleon Golf Club at Mayakoba has been decided by one stroke in six of the past seven years. The high winds that plagued last week’s Bermuda Championship aren’t expected to be a factor on the Greg Norman-designed waterfront layout, and the scores there have historically been low. Viktor Hovland went 20 under par to win last year, and the defending champion leads a strong 2021 World Wide Technology Championship field that also includes Justin Thomas and Brooks Koepka.

Shockingly, the golf expert is fading four-time major champion Brooks Koepka. The 31-year-old opened his season with a T-67 at the Shriners, then shot 15-under but still tied for 38th at the CJ Cup. Last season was derailed by major knee surgery, and he has had a lot of nagging injuries in recent years. He finished in the top 10 eight times last season, but three were in majors and three were in his first seven tournaments. He needs to prove he’s healthy and focused on more than just winning major championships. Johnson will go a different route until he does that.
At the same time, Johnson is expecting Thomas to continue his strong play from the end of last season. The former world No. 1 had a roller-coaster season that saw him finish outside the top 25 eight times in 23 tournaments. But he was 59 under over his final five events and finished no lower than T-26 in that span. He started this campaign by going 18 under to finish T-18 at the CJ Cup three weeks ago. Thomas shot a round of 62 at El Camaleon last year and has been in the 60’s in six of eight rounds there. He was third on tour in strokes gained tee-to-green last season.

The 24-year-old already has three worldwide wins and shot 63-65 on the weekend at Mayakoba in last year’s victory. He also went 18 under at the CJ Cup, and he shot three rounds in the 60’s at the Shriners but was derailed by a third-round 73 to finish T-44. He missed the cut once last season, was in the top 10 seven times and had 14 top-25’s. He broke par almost 25 percent of the time (ninth), was ninth in scoring average (69.888) and finished fifth in the FedEx Cup.
