Canada gets its first UFC event since 2019, as Vancouver, British Columbia hosts UFC 289 on June 10. The main event will be Amanda Nunes defending the UFC bantamweight title against Irene Aldana.
Airing on ESPN+ PPV in the U.S., the fight is in the Rogers Arena.
Nunes defends the bantamweight title for the sixth time. It is the first time she has fought since beating Julianna Pena in July 2022 to reclaim the belt taken from her in December 2021. “The Lioness,” who contemplated retirement after the first Pena loss, is also the UFC featherweight champion.
Aldana, ranked fifth in the rankings, is on a two-fight win streak. The Mexican, with eight wins via knockout, is looking to stop Nunes and become the fourth Mexican fighter this year to win gold, joining Brandon Moreno, Alexa Grasso, and Yair Rodriguez. If she defies the literal odds (+275 underdog per Per Bet MGM), the roof may blow off the Rogers Arena.

“We’ve found strength seeing other peoples’ success,” Aldana told Megan Olivi. “And their (Moreno, Grasso, and Rodriguez) successes are a strength, too. This is very important for Mexico, and I’m ready to give them the fourth belt.”
