Coming off his Presidents Cup debut, Sam Burns aims to repeat as champion at the 2022 Sanderson Farms Championship this week in Jackson, Miss. The 26-year-old set the course tournament record with a 22-under 266 at the Sanderson Farms Championship last fall. It was the first of his three victories last season. He comes off a frustrating Presidents Cup where he went 0-3-2, but his inclusion on the victorious United States team should still put him in a positive frame of mind. Also teeing off Thursday are several 2021-22 PGA Tour winners, including Keegan Bradley, J.T. Poston and Seamus Power, and Tour Championship qualifiers Sahith Theegala and Scott Stallings. This is the ninth edition of the event at the Country Club of Jackson, and six of the eight Sanderson Farms winners on the course were first-time PGA Tour champions.

The latest Sanderson Farms Championship odds from Caesars Sportsbook list Burns as the 11-1 favorite, followed by Theegala (20-1), Taylor Montgomery (25-1),  Russell Henley (22-1) and Denny McCarthy (28-1). Riley, Poston and Stallings all are listed at 30-1 in the Sanderson Farms 2022 field. Before making any 2022 Sanderson Farms Championship picks, be sure you check out the PGA Tour predictions and best bets from golf insider Patrick McDonald.

After spending time at FanSided and NBC Sports EDGE, McDonald joined CBS Sports as a golf writer in the spring of 2022. Now covering the sport from a broader perspective, McDonald still likes to dip his toes into the betting pools on a weekly basis on the PGA Tour.

He takes a measured approach to his outright selections and finished the 2021-22 season up 42 units on those plays, having hit Cameron Smith (22-1) at the Tournament of Champions, Hudson Swafford (250-1) at The American Express, Joaquin Niemann (70-1) at the Genesis Invitational and Justin Thomas (66-1) live at the PGA Championship.

Now, McDonald has studied the 2022 Sanderson Farms Championship field and is locking in his best bets, top sleepers and favorites to avoid. You can head to SportsLine now to see all of his 2022 Sanderson Farms Championship picks and predictions.

Top 2022 Sanderson Farms Championship expert picks

In a shocking prediction, McDonald is fading Burns, despite his status as defending champion. Another of his three victories in 2021-22 was in defense of his Valspar Championship title in March. But McDonald knows how draining a tournament like the Presidents Cup can be, and Burns went 0-3-2 in the event at Quail Hollow. The 26-year-old also finished last season on a low note, posting just two top-20 finishes in his final seven events as his stellar putting lagged.

On the flip side, the expert likes players like Trey Mullinax to succeed this week in Jackson. Players who can hit it a long way have an advantage, with shorter hitters facing very long approaches on several holes. The former Alabama All-American was 19th in driving distance last season and ranked 21st in strokes gained tee to green. Mullinax tied for fourth in Jackson last year, and he won the Barbasol Championship in July to kick off a strong finish to his season. See who else to pick here.
