One of golf’s most exciting — and heartwarming — events is making its momentous return for Volume 7.

The Match has brought some of sports’ greatest personalities to the links, all for a good cause. And the tradition is set to continue this week with the seventh iteration of competition taking place.

This one will pit PGA Tour veterans Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy against a pair of their peers in Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth. This represents Woods’ third-ever foray into the competition — he’s hoping to improve his record to 2-1 with a win on Saturday.

It’s an event filled to the brim with intrigue and humor, each player expected to sport microphones and riff on each other constantly. Anything backed by the dulcet tones of Charles Barkley tends to be exciting; this year’s iteration of the competition should be no exception.

Where is The Match in 2022?

  • Location: Pelican Golf Club, Belleair, Fla.

The Match will be held at Pelican Golf Club in Belleair, Florida. A lush green course that overlooks the sparkling beaches of one of Florida’s favorite tourist spots, the 6,933-yard course hosts a number of official events, including the LPGA’s annual Pelican Women’s Championship.

The Match format

Unlike the format used when NFL superstars Aaron Rodgers, Josh Allen, Patrick Mahomes and Tom Brady took part in The Match earlier this year, Woods, McIlroy, Thomas and Spieth will be graded using a best-ball system. Each player will play their own ball and the best individual score from each pairing will be tallied for each hole. Each golfer will take shots on 12 holes.

The Match purse 2022: How much money will be raised for charity?

The numbers surrounding the amount of money The Match will raise have not yet been published. However, what we do know is the four golfers are competing to raise money for Hurricane Ian relief.

The event has been a real hit in the past, raising over $33 million in aid for various charities.

Who has won The Match in previous years?

The Match dates back to 2018, with Phil Mickelson beating Woods to capture the inaugural competition.

Eighteen months later, Woods got his payback, teaming with Peyton Manning to fell Mickelson and teammate Tom Brady.

Woods took a hiatus from the event thereafter. In his stead came the Manning-Stephen Curry team, which dropped its matchup with Mickelson and Charles Barkley in late 2020.

2021 saw Bryson DeChambeau and Aaron Rodgers get into the event, giving the Mickelson-Brady duo its second straight defeat. DeChambeau wouldn’t keep the winning ways for long, though, falling to Brooks Koepka in a one-on-one matchup later in the year.

Earlier this year, it was the QB tandem of Brady and Rodgers that earned a momentous victory over young guns Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes.
