Pool Three

Updated: 01/18/2023

Pool Three of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager opens for betting at noon ET on Friday January 20 and closes on Sunday at 6pm. Once again the mutuel field consisting of all other 3-year-old males was installed as the morning line favorite at at 6-5 by Churchill Downs oddsmaker Mike Battaglia. Hopeful (G1), Breeders’ Futurity (G1), and Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) winner Forte is the 10-1 second choice for trainer Todd Pletcher. Three horses are tied as the 20-1 third choice: Brad Cox stablemates Corona Bolt, winner of the Sugar Bowl Stakes, and Loggins, second in the Breeders’ Futurity, and Steve Asmussen-trained Extra Anejo, a debut winner at Keeneland who has yet to make his second start. There are 16 new horses in Pool Three, and 1 horse (Two Phil’s) who was in Pool 1, was left off Pool 2, returning in Pool 3.

Note that any horses currently trained by Bob Baffert (or any other suspended trainer) are excluded and cannot earn points toward entering the Derby, however such horses are included in the mutuel field. If they change trainers, then they can start earning points and be included in later pools as separate betting interests.

The Kentucky Derby Future Wager is a two-dollar minimum bet to win only with no refunds if your horse doesn’t start in the race with both win and exacta wagering available. Pool 1 was November 1-3, Pool 2 was November 24-27. Pool 4 is set for February 10-12, Pool 5 is set for March 10-12, and Pool 6 is March 30-April 1. The single Kentucky Oaks Future Wager pool will run concurrent with Derby Pool 5. The 149th running of the Kentucky Derby presented by Woodford Reserve is currently scheduled for Saturday, May 6. Full rules and info for the wager is available here.

You can check real-time odds when the pool is open here. Win wager will-pay prices and exacta pay-offs will be available here after wagering closes. Free BRISnet past performances for Pool 3 are available here.
